〰️ Creative Currents #7: Control vs. Letting Go in Creative Work
Published 3 months ago • 2 min read
Hi Reader,
It feels like we’re shifting into the cinnamon-and-pumpkin-spice season, but where I am, Indian summer fills the days with sunshine and a sea breeze.
Last week, I made the move from Verona in Northern Italy, all the way to Southern Italy, hopped on a ferry to Western Greece, road-tripped to Athens in the East, and then caught another ferry down to Crete. Quite the journey into many celestial directions!
In the weeks leading up to it, I planned, booked, and rebooked. It was stressful at times, but the trip went smoothly thanks to all that preparation.
Yet, it got me thinking: Is having control over everything always the best way or does it cause us more stress than relief?

INSPIRATION STATION
Popping Botanics
Though I wouldn’t call myself a plant lady, my stepdaughter once counted a total of 70 plants in our Vienna home! Still, I rarely illustrate flowers. But even if they don’t end up in a pattern, Botanics do influence my art in subtle ways. I find joy in their bright blossoms and varied shapes. They simply spark something in me, so remember to keep your eyes open for inspiration in unexpected places even when they might not feel like YOU. You'd be surprised what you'll find.

Pattern Play
Pastel Layers
This pattern was born during my time in Tuscany. It felt mesmerizing how Murano glass filters light in colorful, layered shapes. Full of awe, I started by drawing imperfect forms and then layered them to create new shades through the transparent overlaps. The result was an organic, ever-shifting play of color and form—much like light through glass. Tip: Don't be afraid to experiment with the imperfect. Sometimes, it leads to new discoveries that stand out effortlessly.

Writing Challenge
Art comes in many ways and writing is one of them. If you are interested in sharing your thoughts online the Online Writing Challenge by Sinem, Philip, and Jari is the perfect starting point. It’s a 7-day, on-demand challenge with daily video training, a workbook, and community support. For as little as $47, they’ll guide you step by step, helping you publish your first pieces with confidence. I'm currently doing a couple of bigger programs with them and highly recommend their offers as an affiliate (affiliate link).

Fuel Your Flow
Giving Up Control
Too much control, structure, and too many rules can crush me big time. When I feel this daunting experience coming up, I make a 180° turn and embrace unpredictability in my creative process. How do I do this? Simply by using methods that don’t allow for total control, like splashing watercolor, dripping paint, or even drawing with the non-dominant hand. Try it. This might help you tap into the flow and creativity that emerges when you loosen the reins a little. Simply let go and see what happens.
